I'ts all about ME!

Thursday, August 20, 2009

A group of my friends lately visited the Singapore flyer and their feedback about the ride was all negative. They all complained and said it was a waste of money. There chairs are too hard, it is not comfortable, it’s without end, they just went on an on about how boring it was. When our school announced that we would be visiting the flyer, I felt obliged to go. I expected the ride to be exhausting and take ages to make one complete revolution and to add on top of that I am agoraphobic. I pictured myself sited in the capsule and counting sheep until the ride was done, not my idea for one to have fun especially since we had just completed our exams. I began thinking of excuses I would tell my teacher to keep me from going and experiencing the greatest boredom of the centaury but once I found out that the things we would learn would contribute towards our school marks I had no choice but to attend. I decided to bring along a story book and my music player to keep me entertained until the ride was over before the flight was over. Little had I known that I was in for a fun day filled with excitement and anxiety!

When we first arrived at the flyer I noticed how spectacular and breath-taking the venue was. I was exhilarated by the standard of professionalism and it made one look forward to the ride itself. It was extremely eco-friendly. There was a lovely display of plants and flowers of a wide variety positioned underneath the humungous Singapore flyer. The venue also had a clean surrounding with not a speck of dirt around. Everything form the shops to the information office was well organised, to add on top it had friendly staff which never failed to greet one with a smile. When I laid my eyes on the actual Singapore flyer I was taken aback by its magnificent structure and its eye catching view. I was now more anxious to take a ride on it. Little had I known that there were more attractive places to see. The first attraction that I saw from a birds eye view was the Marina Barrage. The marina barrage is a damn built at the mouth of the marina bay area that opens out o the sea to act like a tidal barrier to prevent high tides. It looks set to become the next hot spot for water sports. I also saw the marina bay integrated resort. It will be Singapore’s first integrated resort and will add a new dimension to the landscape of marina bay. The Fullerton hotel and the durian shaped Esplanade was visible from the top of the flyer. Not far from the esplanade was the floating stadium which consists of a 27000 person seating gallery and it’s the world’s largest floating platform. I had a stunning view of all these venues while inside the superb engineering feat.

As the wheel went round, it brought tons of butterflies in my stomach but the cacophony of students’ chatter quickly filled the surrounding and within seconds I had forgotten that I was even claustrophobic to start with. It was not as frightening as I thought it would be. One could barely feel it moving. It was probably due to the fact that I was having too much fun with my friends to notice. I kept my eyes glued on the glass frame waiting to find as many attractions as I could. I and my friends would play a game to see who would spot the most unique locations in a given period of time. If we got disinterested of our mischievous activity we would take pictures with each other and wave at our classmates which were in other capsules. I had loads of fun. I longed for the ride to go on without end. My expectations were more then met. I was blown away by what I experienced. I never thought that I would enjoy myself so much.

The ride

When we reached the peak, which was the highest point of the flyer, which is about the height of a 42-storey building or to be more exact, 31 male giraffes stacked on top of one another, my co-form teacher, Mr Mok, showed us a building that was in a form of a number 13.I stared at the building in wonderment as he narrated the story behind it. Apparently the people who build the hotel dreamt of seeing a number 13. He then went ahead to build a hotel that was in a shape of a number 13. He claimed that it was an auspicious number. I was taken aback by what I heard. I never in my whole entire life imagine that person would go ahead and build something based on what he dreamt. I guess there are a lot of interesting things that will keep you in wonderment.

I not only think it’s a trip worth going but I KNOW so. Singapore Flyer is the world’s largest Giant Observation Wheel and is set to be one of Asia’s biggest tourist attractions. It should be placed as a must see not only with tourist but also with locals. Even though one has been in it before, you will never get tired of repeating the whole cycle. I would definitely recommend that everyone makes at least one trip there. It’s an excellent economic booster at the same time it is good for family or friendship bonding; you can even go to the extent of having a private dinner arranged. The magnificent structure with its panoramic view is a must see for all, but its more enjoyably if you share this memorable experience with a loved one, it’s a joyous experience you will never forget.

Narrative

Anishka sits alone in the dark late at night, cat on her lap dog by her side, the television is on. She can’t sleep but that’s about the only problem. As she focuses his attention on the television, all he sees are people brutally being murdered, women crying and effortlessly struggling to leave behind the remains of their dying children whose body parts are scattered by bombs and lives been lost with a blink of an eye. A tear slowly begins to trickle down her smooth delicate face as she murmur these words to herself without fail to stop, “When is my turn to die, when will I become like them.” Then and there she realises that he is a lucky sod.

Anishka is a Sri Lankan Tamil. Her grandparents were raised and born here. They later died due to health problems and poor Anishka was taken in by an Indian Tamil family. The Indian Tamils were shipped to Sri Lanka by the British. The British gave good benefits to the Indian Tamils over the local Sri Lankan. This angered many Sri LankanS and when the British left 1948 in and Sri Lanka was an independent country the Sri LankanS decided to take their revenge slowly by changing some policies.

It all began in1948 when Anishka’s foster parents went to try and get her citizenship rights has her legal parents had left her with no identity documents. They approached the government house and noticed that their was a long cue made up of mostly Tamils, who were cuing to also get citizenship rights. It was a hot day and they cue stretched out of the building into the hot scotching sun. They waited for hours and hours with the cue barely moving. The sky was steadily growing dark as they finally entered the building. As the people were exiting the building, Anishka noticed of disappointed they looked. Some were crying on their knees and begging for citizenship so that their children can go to school and have a better life. While others yelling and pleading with the officers. Tension and suspense had filled the atmosphere of those waiting in the queue.

“Next,” A women from the counter shouted. Realising it was their turn, Anishka took here mums hand and they headed for the counter.

“Madam, this is Anishka, her parents died of illness and I took her in. they left her with no documents so I came to apply for citizenship for her.” Said Anishka’s mum.

“Are you originally from Sri Lanka,” asked the woman in an inhuman manner.

“No madam, I’m from India” answered my mum

“Then I’m sorry but we can’t grant your daughter citizenship, what if she is really your child and you lying on her behalf”

“No madam she is not, please madam please, she has been through a lot. Pleas help her,” pleaded my mum in agony.

“Please don’t waste my time, next” she shouted with a sly smile across her face, as she turned her attention to the next person.

A puddle of tears filled my eyes as I left the building. My mum picked me and told me,

“Hey Nish, its going to be okay, I want you to walk with your head high, don’t worry as long as we are together it will be fine. Now let me see a smile on your pretty little face”

Anishka wiped her eyes, gave her mum a hug and they walked out of the building together and headed home. As they approached their village in south western Sri Lanka they sensesed that something was wrong. There were people walking out of the village with a small plastic bags which contained their belongings. Smoke filled Anishka’s lungs as she scanned the place to see what was going. Her mum pulled and began running towards what was left of their house only to noticed that it had been consumed in the fire. She noticed a white note on the floor. She picked it up and slowly began to read it. Her hands began shivering and her legs trembled as she read the words that were written on them:

“Tamils aren’t welcome here anymore; go back to where you came from and stop polluting our air.”

Filled with shocked she turned to Anishka trying hard to fight back her tears, and told her that what she watched on TV had now come to our village and it was time for them to go. She assured her that it’s going to be okay but realised that her words sounded fake to her ears to. Anishka, her mum and other Tamils living in the area, headed to the highlands to join the majority Indian Tamils that were living there.

On the way there they met an old friend by name of Vengadesh, who was also an Indian Tamil. He was Anishka’s guardian who found a family for her after her parents died. He was the breadwinner of his family and he was helping Anishka to.

“What’s wrong, why do u look so down.”

“The government says that we should learn Sinhalese within 3 years if not we can not work their anymore, said Vengadesh.

Anishka failed to understand why he couldn’t learn a new language because to her three years was a long time. Little did she know that Vengadesh was illiterate and therefore it will be nearly impossible to learn a new language. She gave him a hug, wiped his tears and told him not to worry that everything would be okay. Taken aback by what she did, he put a small smile on his face and told her she was right. Little did she know that this was just the beginning of struggle that would take years to end, a journey just begun.

Many Tamils were outraged by the way they were being treated by the Sinhalese. A small group of angry Tamils began a movement called the ltte. This movement began fighting against the Sri Lankan armies as they felt that their were being unfairly treated and there was nobody there to listen to them. The movement was set up in the highlands were Anishka stayed with her mum, because there were lot of Tamils there, the Sri Lankan armies began bombing the highlands and other parts full of Tamils. Young boys were taken away from their families and made to fight in there war. Everyday Anishka and her mum lived in fear of their lives. Riots were taking place all. There were bodies of dead innocent children and women who were at the wrong place at a wrong time. People around the village lived their lives not knowing when their time was coming.

The fighting continued over a long period of time. Young children such as Anishka were denied a childhood that people around the world take for granted. All they woke up to was dead bodies and each day they slept in fear of their lives wondering when it will be their turn.

A job discription

Job description
A financial manager is responsible for providing financial advice and support to clients and colleagues to enable them to make sound business decisions. Specific settings vary enormously and include both public and private sector organisations, such as multinational corporations, retailers, financial institutions, NHS trusts, charities, small manufacturing companies and universities.

Financial considerations are at the root of all major business decisions. Clear budgetary planning is essential for future planning, both short and long term, and companies need to know the financial implications of any decision before proceeding. In addition, care must be taken to ensure that financial practices are in line with all statutory legislation and regulations.

Financial managers may also be known as financial analysts or business analysts.

Typical work activities
The roles of financial managers vary significantly. The generic nature of the job title can be misleading and job descriptions should be scrutinised carefully as the level and scope of the responsibilities involved in any role coming under the banner of financial management can differ enormously. In larger companies, for instance, the role is more concerned with strategic analysis; in smaller organisations, a financial manager may be responsible for the collection and preparation of accounts.

Typical activities include:

providing and interpreting financial information;
monitoring and interpreting cash flows and predicting future trends;
analysing change and advising accordingly;
formulating strategic and long-term business plans;
researching and reporting on factors influencing business performance;
analysing competitors and market trends;
developing financial management mechanisms that minimise financial risk;
conducting reviews and evaluations for cost-reduction opportunities;
managing a company's financial accounting, monitoring and reporting systems;
liaising with auditors to ensure annual monitoring is carried out;
developing external relationships with appropriate contacts e.g. auditors, solicitors, bankers and statutory organisations such as the Inland Revenue;
producing accurate financial reports to specific deadlines;
managing budgets;
arranging new sources of finance for a company's debt facilities;
supervising staff;
keeping abreast of changes in financial regulations and legislation.

A job disscussion

I personally liked being challenged and i like hands on activities because their require active participation and anticipate changes everyday. From a young age I have enjoyed group projects and go full out when i am given a task to solve. Being a financial manager i feel it gives me the challenge to organise finances, lead a goup or company financial, ect. With this type of job I will be able to go full out and do my best as it is something I enjoy and it will challenge to take my thinking to a new level as the tasks will get tougher. I enjoy learning and i feel this job will open my eyes to new things and give me an opportunity to learn and progress my knowledge.

With sound financial management, every entrepreneur can answer these questions. Financial management helps you:
• Obtain the financial statements you need to measure company success, meet government requirements, and gather information to use in making management decisions.
• Perform analyses to find profitable directions and eliminate unprofitable ones.
• Handle company finances to maximize profits and maintain liquidity and financial stability, with or without increased sales.
• Protect company assets.
• Plan financially to achieve company and personal goals, including non-financial company goals such as having the best place to work or offering the best quality products, and owner goals such as security, retirement, or leisure activities.
• Prepare financially for unknown developments such as new technology, new or improved competition, changes in customer needs, shifts in the economy, or changes in legislation. This also includes planning for the continued life of the company.
Sound financial management does not eliminate the need for attention to sales, production, and personnel, but enables each of these functions to succeed, and enables that success to be measured. Remember that everything you do in business has a direct or indirect financial implication.

In closing i chose this carrea because it is a hands on job, one gets to plan financial budgets, set long term goals for the company, messure company success and the list continues. It is not a typical office job where you sit for 8 hours glued to your chair and gazing at a your computer but as a financial manager, you are faced with new challenges everyday which requires active thinking.

All you need to know about Thati!

My full name is Onthatile Dineo Dlamini but mostly none as Thati. Iwas born on the 5 of August in the year 1993. I have two siblings, an older brother and a younger sister. Normally when im at home i spend a lot of time talking on the phone with my friends, reading or annoying my sister.

My family is very hyper and we are very close-knit. Most of the time when were together we spend our time debating, singing or making fun of each other. There are normally some ups and downs that we go through as a family, for example we as siblings fight, mostly its me and my sister, at other times my mum will just lecture us for being too untidy or not taking things seriously but most of the time we enjoy each others company. My fathers normally not around, he lives in South africa so most of the time its just the four of us, me, my mum,my sister and my brother.

I enjoy my school life mostly because of my friends and classmates. I have quite a large circle of friends. Most of them from different backgrounds. We usually hang around during recess where we will laugh a lot and joke around. The teachers at school are great and play a part in making school fun. Take for example miss Chin. she can be quite sacastic and strict at times but she is a very nice and humourous teacher if you get to know her, Mrs Soh is also quite funny and makes the class fun and more lively. There are also teachers who just prefer telling storieor about their daily life which i also enjoy. Take for example Mrs Lee, she likes sharing of personal experiencess in her family and about her cooking or past expeirences. From this we can learn and later apply these teachings in life.

I have a wide range of hobbies, i like swimming, singing, acting and telling lame jokes. I mostly specialise in lame jokes which some people find annoying or hilarious. I enjoy telling lame jokes and most people know me for my lameness. I like eating and hanging around with my friends. I dislike backstabbers, lairs and those who look down on people because of what they are and where they come from. I also like people who are discouraging and always tell you that it is impossible to become this or that. I strongly believe as an adult one should encourage a child to do what they want to be, being it the best guiter player a doctor or a clothes designer. If one has their heart set on something and you work towards achieving it then nothing can stop you from achieving your dream. In future i aspire to become the next miss universe and become a famouse actor. Im halfway towards achieving my goal and with an optamistic mind i will get there. I do have some negative points though, i like debating with people and strongly stand for what i belive in, i talk to much too which im trying to reduce as the saying goes, God gave us two ears and one mouth to listen twice as much than we talk. That is basically all about me, my life may not be so fanastic but i kind off enjoy it. I have one life and as long as i live i will make the most out of it, being it a top hollywood actor or miss universe i will make it as my teacher, mrs Phua, once said, "Dont let anyone stop you from achieving what u want to be because people will always ther to bring you down and mock you but if you stand firm then nothing will get in your way."
